Tereza Barnard: Your instructor for this course
Hi, my name is Tereza, and I am a professional realist painter. I went from painting as a hobby to becoming a gallery artist. My work has been featured in the ModPortrait and ARC hardcover books, The Royal Society of British Artists’ annual exhibition and several press articles, including NY’s Create! Magazine. I was a finalist in Figurativas in 2021 and the Blue Review Art Prize.
In 2023 the ruffle paintings you see here and inside the course were at the LA Art Show with Arcadia Contemporary Gallery.
I turn my step-by-step strategies into courses to help people achieve the realistic painting results I have and better.
By the end of the course, you will:
-
The course showcases certain painting principles in action. Once you see them, you should be able to apply them not just to your own fantastic ruffle paintings, but to painting other fabrics too.
-
Using texture in painting fabric can be huge help in improving how realistic your art looks. This course will teach you how to use it.
-
This course is purposely filmed with relaxing background music so that you walk away feeling like you’ve been to a yoga class.
Who is this course for:
-
If you have used oils before and you want to get better, this course is for you.
-
Some of us love courses which you can come back to again and again. If this is you, this course is for you.
-
If you learn best by watching how another artist paints, this course is for you.
Who is this course NOT for:
-
This course does not include basics like studio set up and honestly you could have a hard time with the amount of colours I use if you have never ever used oils.
-
This course teaches none of that. This course teaches realism and how slightly abstract features can help the realism of your work.
-
If you are familiar with observing broken colour in a painting and how and where to use texture, I don’t think this course will teach you that much.

Membership to this Course Specifics
Short intro lectures on preparation of painting surface etc.
The introductory part of the course introduces materials and a typical colour set up. We also cover a simple under-drawing prep which uses pencils or Pan Pastels.
Tutorial on painting pink ruffles from Tereza Barnard’s painting "Hopes.”
This is a more advanced tutorial as painting pink ruffles required more complicated colour combinations then painting the mint ruffles.
Downloadable Booklet of “Little Secrets”
There is also a downloadable booklet featuring specific colour combinations for situations when you paint fabric over skin and the fabric needs to be looked through.
Tutorial on painting mint ruffles from Tereza Barnard’s painting “Expectations.”
The first painting video starts on a second of the painting “Expectations”. This video is here to make you quickly grasp the technique. For some this will be enough to know exactly what to do. For others it will serve as preparation for a tutorial on pink ruffles, which starts from first layer and uses more complicated colour combinations.
Painting without words
Some artists enjoy painting while watching others paint. It can be both inspiring and calming. For this reason, I have included a high-resolution video of me painting mint ruffles with relaxing background music and no talking.
Lectures on Glazing and using texture
Separate lectures on using glazing and texture are also included.
Reference images
The course features an array of reference images of various colours of ruffles for you to choose from for your own ruffle painting.
